Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I'm tuning to 88.1 FM in College Park but I'm not hearing the dulcet tones of college radio! What gives?

A: Remember that we're only a 10 Watt radio station, so our broadcast range has always been small. Right now, it's smaller than it should be, but that's another story. If you hear NPR or Spanish-language programming, it's probably not us.

Q: HEY I HEARD U GUYS GOT KICKED OFF THE AIR HAW HAW HAW.

A: You wish. We are licensed to broadcast, and will continue to do so.

Q: Why don't you guys apply for more wattage/power/coverage?

A: While WMUC maintains no religious affiliation whatsoever, we would like to direct you to the Bible for the answer: "Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God" (Matthew 19:24, NIV).

The prospects for obtaining a new full-power license in a major market like DC are about as slim, and have been ever since the FM band in DC was booked solid in the early 1970s.

That said, we are conducting research on stuffing camels through needles (humanely, we promise!). Get in touch if you have any ideas

Q: You're making too much noise! How do I get you to turn it down?

A: Sorry! All of our staff know that they have to keep it chill during business hours (from 8 AM to 5 PM), but when you love music as much as we do, sometimes it's a little too tempting to put a leadfoot on the volume pedal. We're students and members of the University community, so we're not out to step on anybody's toes here. Mostly.

If you find the noise from WMUC disruptive, please call the FM Studio hotline at 301-314-8800 to speak to the DJ. If you do not get an answer or the relief you seek, please contact the station manager, Scott Maxwell, at scotty@wmucradio.com.
